Counseling for Trauma

Most people will experience trauma in their lifetime. While time is good enough to heal many wounds, it’s no magic solution, and some people still live with deep emotional pain, fear, confusion, or posttraumatic stress far after the traumatic event. In these circumstances, it’s worth speaking to a mental health professional.

If you live in California and feel weighed down by memories you can’t quite shake, online trauma therapy at Jennifer Hamrock Therapy offers a path forward. Many of my clients appear strong and capable on the outside while quietly carrying fear, overwhelm, or disconnection. Counseling for trauma can help you untangle these emotional knots so you can freely move through the world without the weight of your past.

Understanding Your Trauma

The effects of trauma can look different from person to person, but there are four main types of symptoms listed in the DSM-5. These are:

  • Avoidance Symptoms – Avoiding specific locations, sights, situations, and sounds that serve as reminders of the event or anxiety, depression, numbness, or guilt
  • Re-experiencing Symptoms – Intrusive thoughts, nightmares, or flashbacks
  • Hyperarousal Symptoms – Anger, irritability, and hypervigilance, reckless behavior (including self-harm), sleep disturbances
  • Negative Mood and Cognition Symptoms – Loss of interest in activities that were once considered enjoyable, difficulty remembering details of the distressing event, change in habits or behavior since the trauma

If you recognize some of these in yourself or a loved one, consider speaking to someone. Research has proven psychotherapy to be the most effective form of treatment for trauma. Most commonly, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) are used in treating trauma.

Meet Jennifer Hamrock

Trauma doesn’t just impact the mind. It affects your relationships, creativity, physical energy, and sense of identity. So, where do you go from there? I’m Jennifer Hamrock, a trained trauma therapist providing telehealth support in the state of California, and my goal is to help you unravel old patterns so you can access the parts of yourself that were pushed aside in the past. Whether you’re coping with childhood wounds, relationship trauma, or chronic stress, we’ll work at the pace your system needs. Healing becomes possible when your mind and body finally feel supported enough to let go.

My approach is centered on compassion and collaboration. Rather than asking you to simply talk through painful experiences, I’ll guide you through exercises that help your nervous system shift out of survival mode. EMDR is a core part of my work, allowing us to heal traumatic memories at their root and give you authentic, lasting relief. I blend this method with other forms of counseling for trauma and somatic tools to free my patients from that smothering sensation of feeling stuck or disconnected.

Questions About Trauma and Treatment Options

Do you have questions about trauma therapy? Maybe they’re answered here:

How Do I Know If I Need a Trauma Therapist?

You may benefit from trauma therapy if you feel stuck in patterns you can’t break, struggle with anxiety or hypervigilance, experience flashbacks, or feel chronically overwhelmed.

How Does EMDR Help With Trauma?

EMDR works by activating your brain’s natural healing mechanisms, allowing you to process stored memories without reliving the pain. It often brings faster change than traditional talk therapy.

What Treatment Options Do You Offer?

I mainly provide EMDR, attachment-focused counseling, and somatic techniques. These methods can address trauma on emotional, cognitive, and physiological levels.

Can Trauma Therapy Help If I Don’t Remember My Trauma?

Absolutely. Trauma doesn’t always come with clear memories. Your symptoms, patterns, and emotional responses provide ample insight for healing.
